Renascent is an appropriate name for the new Durutti Column record; the LP is a luxury shower of shoegaze-adjacent, detoxifying sound, being the first output in 16 years by the Manchester post-punk trio: guitarist Vini Reilly, drummer Bruce Mitchell, keyboardist Keir Stewart. In that period of a decade and a half, Reilly's health is known to have deteriorated significantly, so this return feels considerably more weighted than the usual long-gap comeback. Sessions took place in Reilly's own kitchen, the Column supporting new guest features like Caoilfhionn Rose on 'Agonistes' and 'Sargasso Sea'. The record should appeal to trip-hop/electronica heads of new, 'Liars' being the front-running single and echoing less their early work a la Without Mercy, and more the deep, driving, bracing downtempo beats of Hysterical Love Project or Headache.
