We are excited to share details of the upcoming Throwing Muses 40th anniversary reissue. As some of the most requested titles by 4AD fans, these albums have been long out of print and highly sought after for years.

Throwing Muses hold a historic place as the first American band ever signed to 4AD. The signing was sparked by a chance encounter when label founder Ivo Watts-Russell listened to the band's self-released demo cassette, The Doghouse Cassette, while stuck in traffic. Reflecting on that pivotal moment, Watts-Russell recalled:

“I listened three or four times in a row. There was something so exciting about them—reminded me of The Birthday Party—the energy, the lyrics. The music was hard and aggressive, but the more you lived with it, the more their beauty came through.”

This relationship transformed 4AD's trajectory. Rooted deeply in the Boston and New England underground music scene, it was through the Muses’ network and shared manager that Watts-Russell subsequently discovered and signed the Pixies.

Over a decade-long partnership, Throwing Muses released seven studio albums and two major EPs on 4AD. The creative lineage didn't stop there; we also became the home for an interconnected web of side projects and offshoots. This included Kristin Hersh’s early solo albums (such as Hips and Makers), 50 Foot Wave's debut releases, Tanya Donelly’s alt-rock band Belly, and The Breeders, which Donelly famously co-founded alongside the Kim Deal.

Ultimately, it all tracks back to their 1986 self-titled debut, a masterpiece of jarring time signatures and visceral emotion that completely shifted 4AD's identity away from UK goth-pop, laying the groundwork for 1990s American alternative rock.
