The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway' marked the end of Peter Gabriel's time with Genesis in 1974, and many fans consider the sixth album to be the best of the band's first phase. The concept album is set in New York and tells the surreal story of a Puerto Rican named Rael who must save his brother.

Gabriel's lyrics pose a great challenge to even the most well-intentioned listener: they are often cryptic and abstract, and it is virtually impossible to discern an understandable plot. Musically, however, 'The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway' covers a wide range of styles, including progressive rock, art rock, funk and jazz fusion.
